S.E.O. – What it means and why you need it

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION

SEO – What is it and what does it mean?

SEO is an acronym that stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is a digital marketing technique that focuses on improving your website’s ranking within a search engine results page (SERP). For example: if you go to www.google.com, type in the search box, and press enter; the next page you will see is the Google search engine results page in which the search engine displays to you what it thinks is the best match for what you are searching for.

The goal is for your website to be displayed on the first page of the search engine results page, with the ultimate goal being the first (top) spot of the first page of the search engine results page.

I have a website – why do I need SEO?

Your website, in similar fashion to your brick and mortar store, has an address. This address is the URL or what people type to go to your website. For example: if your website address/URL is www.isellmeat.com and someone searches isellmeat.com, chances are your website is likely to rank high on the search engine results page. Think of this example similar to giving someone the physical address of your brick and mortar store. If you know where you are going and have directions on how to get there, it’s easy to find.

Where it gets a bit more difficult is when people do not know your URL or address. How are people going to find you? In regards to your website, the most likely way people will find your business is by searching for topics that are relevant to your business by using a search engine such as Google, Yahoo!, or Bing.

Going back to the www.isellmeat.com example, the goal, from an SEO perspective, would be to get your website to rank high on the search engine results page when people are searching for topics that are relevant to your business. A couple relevant search examples could be:

  • Buy meat
  • Buy steak locally
  • Buy chicken near me
  • Best place to purchase salami
  • Ribs sale
  • Order fresh fish

As the make believe owner of www.isellmeat.com, being that I sell those types of meat at my store, I would want my website to rank high when people are searching for the above examples.

In the simplest form, you can do some SEO ranking tests yourself. If you are a business owner, go to your favorite search engine and start doing searches for topics that potential customers could be searching for that are relevant to your business. If your website ranks in the first or second page, you are on the right path. If you end up on page nine, ten , or cannot find your website at all, chances are people doing searches for products or services relevant to your business cannot find your website either.
